This is the beginning of a beautiful relationship. A lifetime of longing was about to bear fruit as I boarded a plane for Africa. It may be hard to believe but I sang Toto’s “Africa” all across the continent. We departed Doha, Qatar at sunrise and got lucky on a beautiful day. The flight line south crossed the deserts of Saudi Arabia and Yemen, the coastal lowlands of Somalia, the desolate midlands of eastern Ethiopia, on to Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, Zimbabwe and finally into South Africa. After a brief stop in Johannesburg, we continued on to our final destination in Cape Town. I couldn’t bring myself to sleep during the trip – I wanted to see everything. Landing in Cape Town, just before sunset, made for one of the most satisfying flights ever.
